Prevalence of High-Level Aminoglycoside-Resistant Enterococci

Abstract
To determine the prevalence of Enterococcus strains highly resistant to gentamicin(500¥ìg/ml), kanamycin(2,000¥ìg/ml), and streptomycin(2,00¥ìg/ml), we performed agar dilution tests in 160 strains isolated at Chonnam University hospital. And we
reviewed
clinical features of patients to determine risk factors for the acqusition of high-level aminoglycosideresistant enterococci. High-level resistance to gentamicin, kanamycin and streptomycin were found in 104(65.0%), 117(73.1%) and 91(56.9%)
strains,
respectively. One hundred twenty four(77.5%) strains were highly resistant at least to one of them; 74(46.3%) to all three aminoglycosides, 30(18.7%) to all except streptomycin, 10(6.3%) to all except gentamicin, 7(4.4%) to streptomycin only and
3(1.9%)
to kanamycin only. Patients with enterococci highly resistant to all three aminoglycosides were more likely to have underlying illnesses (66.7%) (p<0.05). And they were hospitalized for more than 3 days(77.8%) and received prior antibiotic
treatment(81.0%), especially with aminoglycosides(73.0%), but there was no statistical significance.
